Shirebrook Town Market Pedestrian Zone

Posted: Thu, 09 Mar 2017 09:00 by Jennifer Jeffery

In July 2015 the Chairman of Shirebrook Town Council took the decision to temporarily assist with the enforcement of the pedestrian zone around the Market Square. This decision was taken to alleviate problems being faced by members of the public due to vehicles not adhering to the rules of the pedestrian zone in force.

During the past nineteen months staff on duty at the entrance to the 'coned off' area have been subjected to verbal abuse, threats of violence and more recently there have been a number of vehicles blatantly ignoring the rules by driving the wrong way around the square, entering the square at unofficial points and even driving over the cones in a threatening manner. Members of the public are aware that we have no power to take action against those who ignore the pedestrian zone but most have been appreciative of our efforts to assist responsible authorities in contributing to the safety of pedestrians in the area.

This assistance was only ever meant to be a temporary solution whilst the Town Council sought action and enforcement from those responsible for the roadways around the square, however we cannot continue with the system any longer when staff are being faced with the issues outlined above.

Therefore, with instruction from Shirebrook Town Council Chairman and the Market Committee Chairman, we will no longer be 'coning off' the entrance to the square at the junction of Market Street and Station Road.

Please be assured though that the Town Council, with the support of Derbyshire Constabulary, will continue to seek a resolution to traffic issues and remain in talks with the County Council for their assistance in the matter.

Members of the public are reminded that it is their own responsibility to follow the rules of the pedestrian zone and, if applicable, their own blue badge rules in relation to access and parking in general and that parking is not permitted on the actual Market Square on market days.
